Motor Activity Training Program (MATP)

MATP is our Special Olympics movement-based sport program for athletes with profound intellectual disabilities who have high support needs.

Types of MATP Competitions:

  • Challenge Events: MATP athletes can train towards this event where they showcase their unique sporting achievements to family and friends.
  • Come and Try MATP Festival of Sport: Potential MATP athletes can come and try MATP activities to see what sports they are interested in, what motivates them to move more and what motor skills they need to work on, that they can learn through fun sport activities.
  • Demonstration of MATP Sport Adaptations: An opportunity for MATP athletes to demonstrate adaptations and modifications of sport, to show that sport is for everyone, and we can adapt to suit the needs, interests and motivations of all athletes, of all abilities.

Additional information about Special Olympics MATP

MATP gives athletes of all abilities the opportunity to practise skills that will prepare them for sport without comparison to others. The focus of MATP Sport is on achieving personal bests.

MATP can be made up of skill stations where athletes take part in sport related activities that develop their mobility, dexterity, striking, kicking and balance.

MATP also involves group games where athletes can work and interact with others to develop their skills.

All MATP activities are modified to each athlete’s needs, interests, and motivations.

MATP athletes train towards their MATP Challenge Day where they showcase their unique sporting achievements to family and friends.

Divisioning

One of the fundamental aspects of Special Olympics is “divisioning,” a process that groups athletes based on gender, age, and ability. This system ensures balanced and fair competitions, allowing each athlete to compete against opponents with similar abilities.

Training and Preparation

Special Olympics athletes participate in structured training programs, supervised by qualified coaches. These programs focus on developing technical skills, physical endurance, and understanding the rules of the sport. The training is tailored to meet the individual needs of the athletes to maximize their potential.

Support and Integration

Special Olympics events are supported by a network of volunteers, coaches, family members, and friends. This support creates a positive and inclusive environment where participants can grow athletes and as individuals.

Values and Goals

Special Olympics is not limited to competition. It promotes fundamental values such as:

  • Inclusion: Every athlete, regardless of ability level, has the opportunity to participate and compete.
  • Respect: Athletes are encouraged to respect themselves, their teammates, opponents, and the rules of the sport.
  • Determination: Athletes learn to overcome challenges and continually improve.
  • Joy: The sports experience is also a celebration of fun and personal satisfaction.
